Are you a bucket filler?

Being a first year teacher I knew that it would be important to create a classroom environment that fostered a caring and loving environment.  I want my students to not only be successful inside of the classroom, but I want them to be productive and successful people outside of my classroom.  I want to help my students be caring and kind everywhere they go and be able to stand up for what they believe in and be proud of who they are!! In other words I want them to be, "Bucket Fillers." The idea of Bucket Fillers is based on Dr. Donald O. Clifton's metaphor of the bucket and the dipper. There have been several books written on bucket fillers Carol McCloud wrote the book called "Have You Filled A Bucket Today? (A Guide to Daily Happiness For Kids)". The whole concept of the book is the idea that we all carry an invisible bucket that contains our feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When our bucket is empty, we feel sad. A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By being bucket fillers we are not only filling other people's buckets but we are also filling our own in the process. On the other hand, a bucket dipper says or does things to cause other people to feel bad. A bucket dipper empties their bucket when they say and do mean things. The concept of being a bucket filler teaches people to express kindness, appreciation, and love on a daily basis. This is a wonderful concept that people of all ages could benefit from. We as parents and teachers should know we are the ones that make the biggest impression on our children and students and should strive to set the example for those in our lives. To find out more about being a bucket filler everywhere you go check out the bucketfillers101 website at www.bucketfillers101.com
