Today was a beautiful day!

Yep, even with all the dark skies and rain it was a beautiful day! Let me tell you one of the reasons why...I get to coach!! Yes, besides coaching 7th grade volleyball and basketball I get be part of and coach an amazing group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders for an Amazing program called Girls on the Run check out their website to learn more: http://www.girlsontherun.org/
Not only do I get to coach these amazing girls , but I get to do it with so many other amazing coaches who have just as much excitement and passion about the girls as I do. Now that is some great stuff to take in.

It is such an amazing program that empowers young girls to have self-respect, honest, care, and love for themselves and others. The program helps uplift girls through the power of running, exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. What better time to teach girls than during some of the most formative years. I can remember back to when I was in middle school and boy was I self-conscious, unsure and insecure young girl. I know that for myself athletics helped mold who I am today and gave me a great sense of pride and accomplishment while lifting my self-esteem. I believe that through extracurricular activities girls and boys can gain so much confidence and assurance in themselves. Whether it be through running, basketball, soccer, music, dance, art or whatever is important to that child. I think the most vital and important thing is that there is a positive and uplifting mentor to help guide them. (By the way if you know a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade girl this is a MUST program for them)

I know I could go on and on about this, but I promise not to. Although, I do want to share a bit more about today's Girls on the run lesson. We get to do mini lessons, along with a great and fun workout with them each week. Today's lesson was, "Why they are choosing to be a Girl on a run?" These lessons of course should not just be focused on GOTR but can pertain to ANYONE and in any are of their life. We choose to honest, care for myself and others, respect myself and others, try to do my best at all times...well the list goes on and on. You know these are things we are teaching our young ladies, but let me tell you these are things that even we as adults should be learning from. I love the saying kill them with kindness....I know I am an imperfect person and I was made that way through God's love for me. But, with that I strive to live my life with kindness.....so along with my positive quote of the day I am going to create a challenge for myself and anyone who reads this blog. Setting daily goals and challenging ourselves should be a life long quest, not only as individuals but in whatever we do. I know this will be something that I plan to incorporate into my career as an educator. On-going self-assessment and daily challenge to do better and be a better person and educator. This is something that we can do not only for ourselves but we can trickle the attitude and changes into our friends, family, students, and community in which we live.

With that said lets finish strong! With a BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING quote from Emanuel Swedenborg and for those of you who need the history lesson as I usually do, Mr. Swedenborg is a Swedish Scientist and Philosopher who dates back to the early 1700's. But, what wise words he has for us.....
QUOTE FOR THE DAY
"Kindness is an inner desire that makes us want to do good things even if we do not get anything in return. It is the joy of our life to do them. When we do good things from this inner desire, there is kindness in everything we think, say, want, and do." ~Emanuel Swedenborg
DAILY CHALLENGE
Take the time today to tell your child, husband, wife, sibling, mother, father, grandparent, whomeever you live with that you love them! Not only that you love them but thank them for something they have done or simply tell them what they mean to you. I know this could be hard for some or many of you if you have broken relationships with one or all of the above. But, this is why it is a CHALLENGE. For we do not know what tomorrow will bring. If you are as fortunate as me, be happy in knowing you have a your health, a home, people who love you, and people whom you can love back. Now go out and do it!

In the beginning....there was a blog

This is my very first blog post! I utilize technology on a daily basis for school, coaching, emailing, texting and more! But, I have never used a blog as a tool to communicate to others. I guess you have to start somewhere. The name of my blog comes from Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." This has long been my favorite quote that I strive to live by. I know it is not realistic to think one person can change the world, but I love the fact that we as individuals can make a difference in our world by just being that change and usually it has a lot to do with our attitudes. This of course does not always come easily, but is something I strive for and challenge myself with on a daily basis. I feel it is so important to see and look for the best in everyone and every situation. Since welcoming my son Hayden (see pic, isn't he cute?)into the world over 14 months ago I realize even more the importance and impact of this quote. Especially when analyzing my own life and attitudes. What kind of person and what example do I want my son to see? What kind of boy or man do I want him to become? I am sure every parent thinks of these questions, but I truly want to be a positive person in not only his life but in the life of any child I come across.

I have found that this quote is something that holds dear to my heart also in the aspect of what kind of teacher I want to become. I am in my first semester at Armstrong Atlantic State University in the Master of Art Teaching program. Yes, after being out of school for over 10 years I took a leap of faith and am now pursuing a life long dream of becoming one of the few...the proud..well a teacher! I've always had a passion for working with children and since college have been doing just that! Being a collegiate basketball player back in the day, I have always been drawn to coaching. I had my first coaching job when I was 20 years old and of course it has been a love of mine ever since. Today, I coach 7th grade volleyball and basketball at Calvary Day School and I have to say I LOVE IT! The girls I've had the pleasure of coaching are amazing and the faculty, parents, and other coaches have been so supportive. Calvary has truly been a blessing! Throughout these recent coaching experiences and my first few graduate courses at AASU has only increased that passion and desire to become a teacher. I wish I had a classroom yesterday! I know, patience is a virtue, but I truly am so excited about the opportunity to become a teacher.

WOW!!! I am finding this blogging thing much easier than I thought! Well I better sign off for now. I think since I have started with something inspirational I should end with one, right? Well maybe that will be my call sign for this blog. Bringing positivity to those around me, since I spoke of attitude earlier I will leave you with a nice little quote from none other than one of the most famous American Country Western singers, Willie Nelson.

"Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results."

~Willie Nelson
